About ACZ Laboratories, Inc
Founded in 1980, ACZ Laboratories, Inc. is a full service analytical environmental testing laboratory with inorganic, organic and radiochemical capabilities, specializing in the analysis of trace level contaminants in water, soil, sediment, sludge, waste, plant and biota tissue. Located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, ACZ operates out of a 31,000 square foot facility and meets the needs of a broad base of clientele throughout the United States and internationally. ACZ is registered under the U.S. SBA as a small business entity.
Inorganic Analysis
ACZ Laboratories, Inc. has a long standing reputation as one of the top laboratories in the United States for low-level metals analysis.

ACZ is one of the few commercial labs in the country to run EPA 200.8 & 6020 ICP-MS Metals in a class 100 cleanroom. The combination of ICP-MS and the class 100 cleanroom offers major advantages over trace ICP and GFAA analyses. ICP-MS produces higher quality data because it is less susceptible to matrix interferences and it provides lower detection limits, giving greater confidence in data that is near regulatory limits. All three of ACZ’s Agilent 7500C instruments use a second generation Octopole Reaction System (ORS) to eliminate polyatomic interferences, known as the 7500CE configuration.

Prepping and analyzing samples in the cleanroom greatly reduces the possibility of laboratory contamination. ACZ was one of the first laboratories in the nation to purchase an ICP-MS in 1991. With over twenty-one years of ICP-MS experience, multiple instruments and all prep and analysis being conducted in a cleanroom, our clients are assured of the most accurate low-level metals data available.
Organic Analysis
ACZ performs organic chemistry analysis via EPA methods on a broad range of liquid and solid matrices. The organic chemistry department at ACZ is able to satisfy existing regulatory compliance rules as well as adapt to changing industry needs. ACZ is equipped to handle the testing needs of oil, gas and refining companies, mining corporations, wastewater treatment plants, industrial and commercial clients as well as government agencies. Our organic staff routinely performs rush analysis for spill response and projects that require 24 hour turnaround time (TAT) due to the high cost of field equipment required for most remedial field investigations of organic contaminated sites.

ACZ performs all of the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission’s (COGCC) Table 910-1 pit closure parameters “in-house” without the need to subcontract any of the soils work. This turnkey service has major benefits for our customers since they deal with a dedicated, experienced project manager as a single main point of contact and have one reporting package for all of their work.

Our 31,000 square foot facility includes a state-of-the-art organic laboratory which is segregated from the organic prep lab and includes its own air handling system to insure, if not totally eliminate, any air contamination issues.
Radiochemistry Analysis
ACZ Laboratories, Inc. has been providing high quality data in a timely manner to a broad base of clients since 1980. ACZ’s radiochemical clients range from municipal drinking water suppliers to mining corporations. ACZ’s support for the uranium mining industry includes, baseline studies for permitting, operational water monitoring as well as closure requirements for both underground and in-situ mining facilities. ACZ has worked with many governmental agencies on radiochemistry remediation and monitoring projects including: Dept. of Energy (DOE), Dept. of Defense (DOD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), as well as multiple State Abandoned Mine Programs.

ACZ is experienced with radiochemistry analysis on many matrices including: drinking water, waste water, groundwater, surface water, soil, sediment, core samples, tailings, waste rock, plant and biota tissue.

ACZ also provides trace metal and radiochemical analytical support to the nutraceuticals and food industries with testing for Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) as well as gamma analysis on raw food and food ingredients (liquid and solids). Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear incident, ACZ has been supporting multiple importers of raw food and beverage products produced in Japan with radiochemical testing support. Radiological analysis routinely performed are based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Derived Intervention Levels (DILs) for food products via Gamma Spec and include Cs-134, Cs-137 and I-131. ACZ has the capability to see well below the DILs established by the U.S. FDA for I-131, Cs-134, & Cs-137 when sufficient sample quantity is provided. Please note that we can analyze for other isotopes if needed. Links to this FDA guide as well as other regulatory links can be found on ACZ Laboratories’ Download page.

Our recent 9,206 sq ft addition to our current 21,714 facility includes state-of-the art radiochemical instrumentation and prep laboratories. The new laboratory expansion has kept ACZ’s turnaround time for radiochemical analysis the best in the industry, as well as doubled the prep lab hood space which has increased our lab’s sample capacity.
Geochemistry Analysis
ACZ’s large geochemistry department has over 32 years of experience performing mining specific static and kinetic testing for acid rock drainage (ARD) or acid mine drainage (AMD) prediction as well as metal leaching (ML) tests. ACZ Laboratories Inc. was founded in 1980 to provide environmental analytical support services to the mining industry in the Western U.S. Today, ACZ is a full service analytical laboratory with inorganic, organic and radiochemical capabilities and meets the needs of precious metal, base-metal, coal and uranium mining operations throughout the world. ACZ’s main client base is still the mining industry and approximately sixty to seventy percent of current client revenue comes from this thriving global industry.

ACZ has the analytical services and experienced staff to meet the specialized needs associated with the mining industry; from baseline studies and permitting to operational monitoring requirements through closure. Mining corporations and their consultants worldwide choose ACZ as their lab of choice for its turnkey full service capabilities and high quality defensible data delivered in a consistent and timely manner.
Air Quality Analysis
ACZ Laboratories, Inc. offers air quality analysis services by EPA Compendium Method TO-15/TO-17 and the APH method in support of soil gas analysis, ambient air monitoring, vapor intrusion investigations, landfill emissions monitoring and indoor air quality. We provide our clientele with the necessary sampling equipment including: Summa Canisters (1.4L and 6L), Tedlar Bags, flow controllers, tubing and fittings.
