About DAMCO
A land-based component of a giant water-based business, Maersk Inc. is the main US unit of Denmark-based container shipping company Maersk Line, which itself is a subsidiary of shipping giant A.P. Møller - Maersk. Maersk Inc. serves as an agent for its parent, handling inland services for Maersk Line's 500 container ships with an overall capacity of approximately 3.4 million TEU (twenty-foot-equivalent units). The unit's network of about 100 offices in the US, Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean also arranges for customs house brokerage, storage (demurrage and detention), and electronic tracking and documentation. Its Maersk Line affiliates provide trucking and logistics services in the region.
Since the economic crisis caused container shipping and leasing companies to stop producing and sourcing equipment, Maersk Inc. was short on equipment containers when demand returned in 2010. It responded by initiating production of new containers and putting container ships back into action to reposition containers and increase capacity in heavy traffic regions.
