Inclusion and Diversity
Cengage Group has a critical role to play in providing quality, inclusive learning materials that empower progress and combat ignorance. As one of the largest education companies in the world, and a global employer, we are taking action to advance inclusion and diversity efforts in our workplaces, communities and the education experiences we provide to learners and educators. We do this because it’s the right thing to do: for our customers, our employees and our business.

Our ultimate goal is to make inclusion and diversity a sustainable, core part of the Cengage Group culture. We recognize the immense responsibility we have to develop quality learning products and services that are inclusive of all identities, experiences and other forms of difference. Here are a few ways we are bringing this to life:

Our Employees: We recognize the importance of trust and respect amongst employees and ensuring that individuals at all levels of the organization feel comfortable being their authentic selves at work, including voicing their ideas and opinions. We strive to achieve inclusivity at Cengage Group through programs and initiatives that create opportunity for learning, listening and involvement. These include unconscious bias training, inclusive leadership and professional development workshops, speakers from diverse backgrounds, an annual engagement survey, weekly townhalls with the CEO, peer recognition programs and employee resource groups (ERGs). Our robust and inclusive policies and benefits have been recognized by organizations like the Human Rights Campaign.

To enable continuous improvement and sustained success, we have created an I&D Governance Board which is made up of functional leaders and Employee Resource Group representatives who oversee our I&D efforts and measure their impact and success over time. The Governance Board also helps ensure the priorities, efforts and values of the I&D program are fully ingrained into the fabric of how Cengage Group teams work internally, and how our customers experience our products and services externally.

Our Educators and Students: We do more than simply acknowledge diversity—we actively strive for inclusivity in content through the solicitation, promotion, recruitment, valuation and incorporation of different views and experiences. Our efforts center on recognizing and addressing implicit bias in our products, being intentional in our learning design and content creation, and ensuring our content reflects diverse sources of scholarship, research and authorship.

Our Business: Cengage Group works closely with a range of partners to ensure we foster diversity among our employees, across our products and in our businesses. Partnerships also enable talent pipelines to attract, recruit and provide training and apprenticeship opportunities for people from marginalized backgrounds. Our I&D Advisory Council, made up of thought-leaders from across the organization who represent a diversity of our business markets, customers and employees, ensures our I&D efforts are integrated into our company’s long-term strategic roadmap and priorities.
Cengage Group's ERGs
Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-created and employee-led internal communities, providing personal connections and affiliation to promote diversity, openness, understanding, inclusivity and belonging. We currently have five active ERGs: PRIDE, Women in Technology, GREEN, Mental Health Alliance, and Mosaic (an ERG for BIPOC employees).

Mosaic: Mosaic’s mission is to empower Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) employed at Cengage Group and ensure recruitment and retention practices reflect the diversity of our industry and the customers we serve. Mosaic members have led all-company discussions around the actions we can take as a company and as a community to confront and mitigate systemic racism.

PRIDE: Our PRIDE ERG promotes an inclusive culture that empowers and supports LGBTQIA employees and allies of all backgrounds. It offers social and networking opportunities for our members and promotes activities that raise awareness about the LGBTQIA community and highlight the needs of our LGBTQIA learners.

Women in Technology (WiT): The goal of our WiT ERG is to promote a culture that supports and empowers women and people of gender minorities at Cengage Group. Through shared practical insights, networking opportunities and mentoring, WiT members are inspired to learn and grow to achieve their professional goals with confidence.

GREEN: The mission of the GREEN ERG is to serve as a resource to employees that enables them to be better, more sustainable citizens, while also initiating quantifiable change within Cengage Group as a whole that positively impacts the environment.”¯”¯

Mental Health Alliance: The MHA ERG is dedicated to supporting employee education and growth around mental health topics in service of eliminating the stigma that still exists within our culture at large. By increasing our collective awareness around issues of mental health, MHA bolsters the company’s overall commitment to diversity and inclusion both internally and within the products we create.

ERGS in Action: Our ERGs offer a variety of on-going programs, including Mosaic Match which provides networking opportunities for BIPOC Cengage Group employees. They also lead events and community activities throughout the year – for example, this video series where Mosaic members shared their personal stories around “What does Juneteenth mean to you?”
Benefits
At Cengage Learning we are accountable to and for each other. Part of that is recognizing the commitment, talent and skills of our employees by offering a comprehensive benefits plan and program. As a full-time employee scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week, you become eligible for most benefits on your date of hire.

Health benefits don’t start when you get sick – we encourage employees to “Learn to Live Well,” promoting a healthy lifestyle through a suite of programs that include flu shots, mammography, biometric screenings, education sessions and health fairs.

We also believe in career development for each and every one of our employees. Our expanding Learning and Development program lets you take advantage of online and in-person programs to build new skills and advance your career. Through in-house training and classes, our employees learn about the business of changing education as we enrich the relationships between educators and students, and eventually lead the charge.
